SEEN AND UNSEEN - up date
27th March 2024
We finished the Kelly exhibition hang at Theatre by the Lake yesterday and even by Kelly standards it is breathtaking. The theatre was closed for a week for essential pre easter works so the Calvins and I were left in peace apart from the increasing numbers of staff and builders and painters who seemed to suddenly need to wander through, stop and marvel. “Who is this Percy Kelly?” one of them asked? “I’ve never seen anything like it.” I have just put everything on the web site www.percykelly....

PERCY KELLY; SCENE AND UNSEEN the sequel!
25th February 2024
There is great excitement throughout the land about this Percy Kelly fund raising exhibition at Theatre by the Lake in Keswick which I flagged up in my last posting. (It opens Saturday 30th March and runs to April 20th. Open daily 12noon – 7.00pm. Closed Sundays. Admission free.) The reaction to this news was astonishing. Tickets to the first public screening of a previously unseen piece of film about Kelly dating back to 1963/4 sold out as soon as my newsletter hit your screens leaving a lot...

DRAMA AND MYSTERY AT THEATRE BY THE LAKE
7th February 2024
I heard Melvyn Bragg, speaking in the House of Lords this week, say: WE ARE SLEEPWALKING INTO MEDIOCRITY – HERE’S WHY WE NEED TO REVIVE THE ARTS. Until a few years ago, Melvyn, erstwhile chair of Words by the Water would be getting ready to travel north in spring for the annual literature festival at Theatre by the Lake but due to a tragic illness suffered by the founders (Kay Dunbar and her now full time carer husband Stephen Bristow) it had to come to a halt. It is still sadly missed and has...

... AND A PARTRIDGE IN A PEAR TREE
8th December 2023
Percy Kelly used to make a start on his Christmas cards every year in September. Each one was a one-off piece of art with a unique design which he varied as he went along. Some were lino cuts, others hand painted small etchings as well as delicate cut- out cards and if you were very lucky he would decorate the envelope as well. He did many versions of this one when he lived at Pear Tree Cottage in Norfolk at the end of his life which seemed appropriate. They were eventually posted after a frant...

SHIPPING BROW GALLERY - CHECK IT OUT!
19th November 2023
Apologies for the long gap between communications – I’ve had a lot to deal with lately – but you are not forgotten. I have news … lots of news … and all of it good … so far! I’ve been to Maryport twice this week – both enjoyable trips. On Tuesday I was at the Lifeboat station where Maryport Rescue was celebrating its well deserved King’s Award for Voluntary Service. These dedicated people, like Air Ambulance and Mountain Rescue etc, don’t get any government money - they rely on donations. All ...

DIGGING DEEP IN CARLISLE
29th September 2023
DIGGING DEEP Sometimes good things come out of bad. Carlisle Cricket Club was badly hit in the terrible floods in 2015 after their site north of the River Eden in Bitts Park was very badly affected. Their clubhouse, which was damaged beyond repair, needed to be demolished and rebuilt. A team of archeologists gathered in May 2017 to evaluate the site before planning could be considered. It quickly became obvious that the site, by a bend in the River Eden, very close to Hadrians wall, was holdi...

CONNECTIONS
7th August 2023
Went on a trip to Kendal last week to see what was happening at Abbot Hall after more than three years of closure. It is one of the best known and loved northern galleries What a surprise and a revelation. The once dark entrance hall was full of light. For the first time in the forty years I’ve been going to exhibitions there, the shutters were open revealing the eastern view across the lawns to the River Kent. What was even more pleasing as I looked down – there were people out there sitting a...
