SOUTH OF THE RAISE

The North/South divide in Cumbria has widened owing to the devastating storm which washed the A591 away below Dunmail Raise which made it difficult for many people to get to the Words by the Water Festival in Keswick in March and particularly to my talk about my new book.Life Class

So I was pleased to be invited by the laudable Heron Theatre in Beetham ( a few miles south of Kendal) to do an evening as a last minute extra to their programme which had already gone to print. I love to be at The Heron so I immediately accepted. However I'm having a last minute panic that there will only be 2 men and a dog in the audience.(which doesn't matter but the dog could be a problem!)

So - I am coming South this Friday 15th to 'do a turn' as their stalwart programming manager Stuart Newton puts it. Starting at 7.30  I will be illustrating, in words and pictures, some of the more bizarre happenings behind the scenes during my  25 years as an accidental gallerist at Castlegate House. You never know - I may be wearing the Magic Knickers into which I was coerced by artist Enid Foote Watts in Glasgow; telling how I reluctantly sold my sofa to journalist Hunter Davies and how a flock of sheep came to graze in the garden at Castlegate. I may even dare to show a 'stolen' Percy Kelly painting which has always stirred up trouble whenever it has seen the light of day. (I keep it in a dark cupboard with a clove of garlic!) and tell of my unending search for recalcitrant artists.
There is much more - of course.
At £5 a ticket this is good value for a night out - but I would say that wouldn't I?
Come and support me and the Heron Theatre; learn a lot more about art and what it takes to run a gallery; see  some superb images of works which have passed through my hands and have a good laugh at some of the crazy situations I've got myself into.
You can pay on the door -  bring your friends along too. The more the better.
Chris
