Noisy owls and dead nuns is the title of a super-slim volume of outtakes at Theatre by the Lake in Keswick. Last year David Ward discovered the stage manager's daily log of unscheduled happenings on stage or auditorium at the theatre. In the hands of a former Guardian journalist with a wicked sense of humour this became a ten minute laugh-out-loud read leaving one wanting more. Understandably it sold enough copies to merit a speedy reprint with all funds going to the theatre.

On Monday 4th March in the Studio at 5pm - David, with the aid of theatre staff will talk about the perils of live theatre. I will attempt to chair this unruly mob who forget their underpants, ad-lib and deal with unscheduled surprises on and off stage.

This is just a flavour of the diversity of the ten day Festival of Words and Ideas which opens 1st March. There is something to interest everyone with novelists, comedians, biographers, politicians, poets - all aspects of literary life will be there. Keswick will be buzzing with familiar faces, new ideas, old friends and fresh experiences. For me it's like a 10 day really good party. Join us if you can.
